Types of Hearing Loss
HOW OUR EXPERIENCED AUDIOLOGISTS TREAT DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEARING LOSS
Hearing loss affects millions of people each year and can range from mild difficulty understanding speech to complete hearing impairment. If you are suffering from hearing loss, understanding the types that you may be experiencing is the first step toward finding the right hearing loss treatment. There are three primary types: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss. Each has different causes and requires a specific approach from an audiologist.
Conductive Hearing Loss
This occurs when sound waves can’t properly travel through either the outer or middle ear. There are a number of possible causes, including earwax buildup, infections, fluid, and issues with the eardrum or bones. These causes are typically treatable, meaning that conductive hearing loss is often temporary. Once the blockage or damage has been properly identified, the problem can be treated by medication, minor surgery, or removing obstructions to restore normal hearing.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
This is the most common type of hearing loss and results from damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. It can result from noise exposure, certain medical conditions, or just simple aging. This type tends to be permanent, but can still be addressed through the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive listening devices that amplify sound and enhance clarity.
Mixed Hearing Loss
This is a combination of both of the above types and demands a tailored approach that addresses each underlying issue.
